Its finally the end of the ski season. Nevertheless, I somehow managed to go skiing two weeks ago, for a very messy (drunk) trip. If you’re sat whinging on your sofa, complaining to your boyfriend or girlfriend about not having made it out – tough luck. Maybe next season you might get lucky, or throw some cash at something thats extremely enjoyable. Oh, and without rubbing it in there was still a shit load of snow whilst we were there.
Yes, its ludicrously easy to have fun at a ski resort. I wish I could have stayed longer, but reality was calling me back. Almost like an anxious mother screeching at her toddler whom had just run off to play with the other kids on a climbing frame. Hopefully you get the gist. But, coming back to reality sucks.
Nonetheless, these are 10 things I’ve come to realise after having come back from another awesome ski trip:
1. Everything looks dull and grey
When you’re on the slopes you’re surrounding by beautiful scenery. Even the ski resort looks like it has naturally grown from the depths of the mountain. So coming back to a dull, and very dark city majorly sucks. Just take a look at the image (above) I took in Sestriere a few years back!
2. The majority of people are rude
If you’re on a slope and fall, guarantee there will always be someone there to help you. If you fall over in London, people wont even blink an eyelid. If you compare public transport to a ski lift: you’re definitely not able to have deep meaningful conversations with strangers about the things you’re passionate about. That shit rarely happens in London.
3. General fashion really sucks
Im not talking about the ability to wear whatever you want on a slope and still look cool. Rather, the fact that ski attire looks better than what those hipsters are wearing stuck outside Old Street train station sucking on a rollie.
4. Everyone doesn’t look as great
In contrast to the majority of people in a ski resort everyone looks somewhat ugly (joking). Maybe skiers and boarders have better genes so look better. Or, maybe its the snow and surroundings that make people look better.
5. You aren’t able to get ski trip messy
Ski trip messy consists of long arming pints, spilling wine all over yourself.. lets just say anything that is simply pure messy. Nonetheless, I guess you can back at home, but the probability of you being kicked out is extremely high.
6. You aren’t able to walk around with a GoPro
When you’re at resort, it is perfectly normal to walk around with a GoPro either strapped to your helmet or hooked onto a poll. I took my GoPro clubbing once in the UK, well directly after a ski trip and everyone looked at me like I was a twat. On the other hand, at the previous ski resort I could take my GoPro with me clubbing. And, I didn’t get any inundating death stares. After all you gotta’ get some great ski footage and clubbing shots when you’re on a ski trip!
7. Waking up at the crack of dawn isn’t easy
Did you know that 62% of Brits need between 15 minutes and an hour after waking up before feeling human. Many people in the UK put their alarm clocks on snooze to avoid getting up. When you’re skiing you literally throw yourself out of bed first thing in the morning to ensure that you’re on the first chair lift.
8. Wine isn’t cheap
Depending on where you are, the majority of French resorts have cheap wine at incomparable prices. Its probably cheaper to buy a glass of wine rather than a bottle of water out there.
9. Bars don’t serve Peche beer
Everyone loves peche in their beer, I personally like the peachy flavour. Why are pints so boring without peche?
10. Some people actually get to ski all season
Unless you’re a pro and being sponsored to ski, or live near a slope then skiing can put a massive dent in your wallet. Whats worse is knowing that some people actually have the luxury of living next to the beautiful white powder called snow.
If you have never been skiing before I highly doubt you give a shit. But definitely give it a try sometime.
